What's Vonage?  It's a company that provides phone services over a broadband (i.e. high-speed) internet connection. Caveats.  Obviously, having a phone service that relies on 100% access to the Internet does imply some risk. I have Earthlink cable-modem (provided by AO-Hell Time Warner) and when the cable goes out, the phone line dies. But, given the ubiquitous and wide-spread nature of cell phones, this should not present a major problem.  When the house loses power and the lights go out, the cable modem and Vonage phone adapter both stop working, and the phone also stops working.  Thankfully, uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs) are inexpensive and provide temporary power to keep important equipment functioning during a power outage.
